Growing Together: LASCO Welcomes New Distributor Ethan Johnson

At LASCO, we believe the best innovations are proven in the field. That’s why we’re excited to welcome Ethan Johnson of Glyndon, Minnesota, as an authorized Lightning Weeder™ distributor through his company, Red River Zapping.

Ethan’s journey with the Lightning Weeder began the same way many of our customer relationships do—with a challenge to solve. As herbicide-resistant weeds continued creating pressure on his family’s sugar beet operation in Minnesota’s Red River Valley, Ethan began looking for practical solutions that could complement traditional weed management practices.

After purchasing his first Lightning Weeder in 2023, Ethan quickly put the technology to work on his farm. The results not only helped address weed control challenges on his own operation but also generated interest from neighboring growers facing similar issues. What started as a solution for one farm soon expanded into custom application work for more than 25 farms throughout the region.

Today, Ethan brings that same firsthand experience to growers across the Red River Valley as an authorized LASCO distributor. Through Red River Zapping, he provides demonstrations, consultations, sales support, and guidance to farmers interested in learning how electric weed control can fit into their operations.

His story reflects something we value deeply at LASCO: solutions developed alongside farmers and proven through real-world performance.

Finding a Solution in the Field

Like many growers across the country, Ethan was facing the growing challenge of herbicide-resistant weeds. According to the International Herbicide-Resistant Weed Database, more than 540 confirmed cases of herbicide-resistant weeds have been documented worldwide, involving 273 weed species and resistance to 168 different herbicides. As resistant weeds continue increasing pressure on yields and production costs, farmers are seeking practical tools that help maintain profitability while reducing reliance on chemical-only weed control programs.

For Ethan, the search for a solution led him to the Lightning Weeder.

“We have seen excellent results controlling herbicide-resistant weeds that chemicals can’t touch,” said Johnson. “Last season we custom-applied the Lightning Weeder for more than 25 farms throughout the region. My brothers and I ran the machine around the clock for over two weeks, and I was incredibly impressed by its reliability and performance.”

Proven Performance Across the Red River Valley

Located in one of North America’s most productive sugar beet-growing regions, Ethan’s operation provided an ideal testing ground for the Lightning Weeder. As neighboring growers observed the results, demand for custom application services continued to grow.

The Lightning Weeder utilizes LASCO’s patented Electric Discharge System (EDS), delivering electrical energy directly into unwanted weeds. The process rapidly heats moisture within the plant, damaging plant tissue from root to shoot while helping growers reduce reliance on repeated herbicide applications.

As more farmers look for additional tools to address resistant weeds and late-season escapes, electric weed control continues gaining attention as part of an integrated weed management strategy.

Why Ethan Chose Lightning Weeder

Ethan’s confidence in the technology grew through hands-on experience and direct comparison with competing equipment.

“After spending more than 30 hours operating another electric weed control system, I knew we needed another Lightning Weeder,” Johnson said. “The user-friendliness of the LASCO system is unmatched. We ultimately sold the competing machine and invested in another Lightning Weeder because it simply performed better for our operation.”

For LASCO, feedback like Ethan’s reinforces our commitment to developing equipment that performs where it matters most—in the field.

Supporting Growers Through Red River Zapping

As an authorized distributor, Ethan now serves growers throughout the Red River Valley and surrounding agricultural communities. Because he uses the equipment himself, he understands the practical questions farmers ask when evaluating new technology and can share real-world insights from his own operation.

Growers can schedule demonstrations during the growing season at the Johnson family farm in Glyndon. Ethan also provides phone and Zoom consultations to discuss equipment compatibility, tractor setup, and how the Lightning Weeder can integrate into existing weed management programs. He will also be showcasing the technology at a regional farm expo near Georgetown, Minnesota, on September 13.

Looking Ahead

At LASCO, our mission has always been rooted in helping farmers solve real-world challenges with practical, field-tested solutions. Ethan’s journey from customer to distributor is a great example of how innovation grows when farmers share their experiences and help one another succeed.

“Herbicide resistance is a growing challenge that continues to increase costs and complexity for farmers,” Johnson added. “The Lightning Weeder has helped us stay competitive, and I’m excited to help more growers throughout the region evaluate whether this technology can benefit their operations.”

We are proud to welcome Ethan to the LASCO distributor network and look forward to supporting growers across the Red River Valley together.
